cidb Supports World Green Building Day
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) COP 15 negotiations in Copenhagen in December this year present an opportunity for the world to reach agreement on measurable actions in the global building sector to dramatically reduce global climate change, while ensuring continued economic development. In support of these negotiations and to help focus world attention on the impact of the building sector on climate change, 23rd September has been declared as “World Green Building Day” by the World Green Building Council to focus attention on the potential that buildings have to contribute to a reduction in Greenhouse Gasses emissions.
In support of focusing international attention on the role of the building sector, the UNEP-SBCI has released an industry "
Call to Action
"
, together with a
technical background document.
The cidb is actively participating in addressing the role of buildings in climate change - in particular in public buildings. The cidb is a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa
(GBCSA)
and a member of the UNEP Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative
(UNEP-SBCI)
, and is a co-author of the discussion document
South African Report on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Potentials from Buildings
. Together with the national Department of Public Works, the cidb is also investigating possible requirements that all new public buildings of certain asset classes should be 4-Star Green Star SA rated.
